29mm RELOADABLE MOTORS

Aluminum reloadable casings. Propellant cartridges
to fit for multiple reuse. Increased labor but lower
cost than expendables. Only standard coreburning grain
geometry type motor loads available.


U.S. Rockets R&R Reloadable 3 propellant grain 180 N-s power motor system with casing,
closures, propellant, delay, thermal liner, and nozzle. The rear closure has an integral
thrust ring and the forward closure can be plugged or have a user modifiable delay.


U.S. Rockets R&R Reloadable 4 propellant grain 240 N-s power motor system with reusable
closures and expendable propellant reloads are compatible with the "other" brand casings
in the market. 240 N-s power systems are the largest FAA exempt motors, being under 125 grams
propellant. Our system has fewer parts, fewer leak points, uses less grease, is more suitable
for assembly in cold weather or for folks with fat fingers or gloves on, and allows reuse of
the nozzle in many instances.

Users who save superior quality used U.S. Rockets brand nozzles,
repurpose them for use with our "propellant bulk packs" to save cost.

First purchase CLOSURE SET includes nozzle holder end
closure, delay holder end closure, liner ejector dowel, spare
o-rings, instructions. All other parts are separate components
for replacement or special applications. Nozzle closure has
positive seal in two places and recommended nozzle (included
in reload packs) is reuseable at least three times. Bulkhead
closure has positive seal in one place and standard friction fit
delay element. Closure accepts small quantities of ejection
powder in the well and 1/4g to 3/8g is recommended for MR and
LMR respectively. Liner ejection tool aids removal of paper
liners which have been damaged by long duration propellant
loads thus protecting the valuable casing system. Extra o-rings
are included for replacement as they become damaged during
normal usage. In particular the nozzle o-ring can be damaged
by installation of nozzles so bevel the nozzle edge slightly
with sandpaper to increase seal life.

Closure has positive seal in one place and standard friction fit
delay element. Closure accepts small quantities of ejection
powder in the well and 1/4g to 3/8g is recommended. Delay needs to
be a tight (interference) fit. If loose add a FLAT layer of clear
tape to the outside surface until it is a tight fit. Closure edge
is slightly beveled to allow insertion and the delay should be a
clean smooth edge. Debur the end circumference as needed by rubbing
on a smooth surface such as glass.

Packaging of 29mm reload kits

3 flight loads to a typical package.
Includes 3 liners, 3 sets of propellant grains, a single nozzle to
be reused, and instructions. Kits specifying a delay come with the
delay pre-cut and in some markets a small package of black powder
for the ejection charge. If black powder does not come in your kits
in your market, it is available from any gun shop with no permit and
you should select 3F or 4F grain size. The instructions specify
quantity but generally 1/3 to 2/3 of one gram is all that is needed
for model rockets up to 4 inch diameter by 3 foot section. Delays
are always free for related propellant purchases and even if you buy
a kit without a delay and want to add one we or our dealer will
cheerfully provide you with delay either pre-cut or a stick you can
cut to length as needed for the load selection, rocket weight and
weather conditions. See our tips and tricks website or instructions
for delay selection and modification. Delays are VERY dimension
sensitive. Exact cut lengths are critical. 1/32 of one inch is a full
second of delay time.

Here is a legendary USR R&R 29mm 600 I, 5 long grain case.



Try one of the more innovative and exciting motor systems around.

A 29mm 720 case and associated Whitestar load produces almost 81
pounds of thrust for almost 3 seconds. You can get a case system
and three loads for around $105 + $210 MSRP.

A 29mm 960 case and associated Whitestar load produces almost 108
pounds of thrust for almost 3 seconds. You can get a case system
and three loads for around $110 + $280 MSRP.

On the other end of the spectrum you can get a 29mm 60 case and associated
Standard loads which produce 7.8 pounds of thrust for 1.8 seconds, for those
small field flights. You can get a case system and six loads for around
$60 + $36 MSRP. That's about 6 bucks a flight for a mid-range 29mm diameter
60 N-s F33 motor as compared to a 24mm diameter 28 N-s Estes E9 at about $5.
That's a large power discount.

A 29mm 240 case and associated Standard load produces almost 31.4
pounds of thrust for almost 1.8 seconds. You can get a case system
and three loads for around $75 + $71 MSRP. This is an FAA exempt
propellant weight. About 24 bucks a flight and suitable for small
fields with a 4 inch rocket. The 240 N-s power H133 for $24 ($0.098/N-s)
is a 47% power cost discount to the $5 Estes 27 N-s E9 ($0.185/ N-s).

Several 29mm 1 grain 60's can be clustered in three (USR 66mm "Host Mount"-tm)
or four (USR 76mm "Host Mount"-tm) under the 125g FAA limit.
The extra closures can be reused for any length motor or on-field spares.

Motor systems up to 240 have under the FAA exempt propellant weight.

I have had no failures but I also haven't had a lot of flights. The only size I have used is 29mm 180ns and I found the closure method to be innovative and the coolest screw closure I have ever seen. I really liked the axial compression of the o-ring around the nozzle - it's elegant and fits how o-rings work better than some other designs.

I will mention that those reloads Jerry has been talking about are really quite impressive. I've flown about 5 of the H motors (H180 and H240). What is equally impressive is how over-engineered Aerotech reloads are. It would take a bit of time to explain the differences here, but trust me...Jerry's reloads come with nothing more than a nozzle, some grains and a liner and it still works! The key is in the design of the aft closure. This is a very simple system. Now my only complaint. I lost my closures to a failed motor retention system. Sob.

I flew some of Jerry's motors in the past, but never his Reloads. Today I flew an H360 Buttkicker load for the 29/180 casing. His closures fit the Dr. Rocket casings better than the Dr Rocket closures. Assembly is 1/2 the time of an Aerotech load. Really simple and nicely built.

The load was a wee bit underpowered and a little longer burn, but still a magnificent H motor.

38mm anyone? Ha....I'll be flying more of these!

I hate to, but I have to agree or I'd be lying. I have launched the Whitestar reloads ( they were NOT underpowered :-) and they are simple and work perfectly. Simple & elegant.

Yes, I did see more failures [1991-3] than the current level from Aerotech as well, for whatever reason. And just for clarity, I should point out that my comments are just based on my own, somewhat limited, experiences with motors from both companies, and that I was generally pleased with both the quality and the level of service from either company. Also the Firestarters are the coolest motors of all time IMHO. [in my humble opinion]
